DEMOfall 2006: PhotoCrank

“PhotoCrank is a fun and easy way to add captions on top of your cameraphone photos”. Using technology to enhance camera phone photos is what they call “cranking”.

To crank a photo:

  1. Take a picture
  2. Initiate a picture message
  3. Add some text
  4. Send to a photocrank e-mail address
  5. Response contains an enhanced photograph with graphics and text on top.

Target market is mobile users from 18-24.

Your cranked photos are archived at photocrank.com. The site contains a callerty of images that you can use. By sending a text message to the code listed, you are given the address to use for the crank effect.

    fonpod was started to provide convenient, cost-free mobile access to content. Dialing the phone turns the cell phone into an iPod.

    Through the web interface, you can create your own series using content from a wide range of popular podcasts. User ratings and previews enable you to make more informed decisions abotu what you want to listen to.

    The My Series feature allows you to create your own channel to listen to, as opposed to having to stay subscribed to an entire show.

    Streaming video - it’a about communication - “we’re all storytellers”. Video editing software is way too complicated. eyespot is their antidote to video editing software.

    You can assemble your clips using a simple drag-and-drop tool as well as search for other media to include. Special effects and transitions allow you to improve the way the story is told. It can be topped off with a wide range of free music available from a number of labels.

    Once your video is mixed, you can publish it by e-mail, to your iPod, or to a number of video sharing sites.

    Problem with eyespot is that it’s only online. eyespot Mobile Share, the world’s first mobile video sharing solution. The system allows you to navigate using your phone. Subscriptions to feeds are quick and easy. Searching for video is simple as well.

    They also make it easy to get video off of the phone.

    Send a text message to 44636 with demo in the body to test out the service.

    To build your own app, 4info guides you through creating your own keyword. Once that keyword is chosen, you are given 4 options for pulling content into the system - RSS is prominent in the mix. The system can be expanded to accomodate a few variables that allow you to create interactivity.

    Service works over text message as well as WAP.

    Drivers behind the business:

    1. Runs on 300M MP camera phones that have already shipped.
    2. Large market dedicated to helping people digitize their documents - what is new is that the service allows it to happen conveniently and immediately.

    100B videos and photographs captured every day - only 5% make it off of the device itself. They recognized that the method used to move it off were largely messaging techniques (e-mail, sms) but not tools designed for archiving.

    With PixSense, you simply take the photo. In the background, the application makes use of the metadata available. They detect when you take photos in bursts and group them automatically.

    There are a number of plugins that will move your photos to the leading properties.

    The secret sauce is the compression - PixSense Bio-Compression. They are looking to make it more cost efficient for users to archive their data in this manner. The cited problem relates to network data costs primarily.

    Qipit is an online mobile service that allows you to capture and share information that is around you and important to you.. with a camera phone.

    With a simple photo from the camera phone, the image is sent to your e-mail as well as your friend’s e-mail address.

    Qipit allows you to mail or fax from the web interface. The quality seems clear - apparently qipit provides some assistance to optimize this image.

  • E-mail has a problem - it creates a permanent, time-stamped record that is out of our control. The lack of privacy may be a hindrance to us having open communications.

    They started with 2 design guidelines:

    1. Couldn’t use existing infrastructure
    2. Had to be recordless

    VaporStream - the world’s first recordless electronic communication. Secret is the separation of the message from the header. At no time are these two sets of data stored together.

    The system offeres “Instant, guaranteed information and presence information.”

    They need to establish new user policies to see the system succeed.

    BuzzLogic turns the chaos of social media into a channel that can be understand and monetized. The ability to monitor, measure, and engage with influencers.

    The Conversation Index doesn’t stop at blogs since relationships don’t either. There are able to map out “who’s spreading the flu and turning it into an epidemic”. The goal is to help companies focus their listening. “Better listening makes for better marketing.”

    In the demo, they show how Microsoft can use the system to engage a blogger than influences the top influencer for Zune coverage. The Zune team will be able to track the results of the engagement.

    BuzzLogic lets you:

    1. Monitor any conversation
    2. Identify the top influencer
    3. Map how they yield their influence
    4. Engage those influencers

  • Demo Fall 2006: Serebrum

    A new way of looking at enterprise information - built on the Wiki mentality. They take a topic-based approach. They’ve added a number of unique Ajax hooks to move the Wiki metaphor ahead.

    The application allows for the modification of word and excel-like data. As opposed to having it “stuck in a spreadsheet”.

    The data store is called Axon. The data can then be published into PDF or word.

    The application is accessible as well via mobile devices like the Blackberry.

    The company is backed by the DoD and they are working on securing wiki content.
