Confessions of a Social Tools Architect
19 Sep
I recently talked about my dad and the role he played in me being the entrepreneur I am today. This morning, I stopped by B&N to rest for a short while and noticed a book called Instinct. It’s a book about entrepreneurship. I saw this quote and had to write it down:
People who exhibit entrepreneurial behavior may or may not be successful, and entrepreneurial behavior isn’t necessarily passed on. The entrepreneurial spirit can be expressed in many ways that have nothing to do with starting a business.
“Nobody’s yet found [a specific genetic link], but anecdotally you sort of see it. Even though children of entrepreneurs tend to regress to the average, they probably are more entrepreneurial than the standard average, at least for a few generations,” says Kinnear. “Of course, if they get too rich, then they become Paris Hilton.”
Where biology may play a role is in creating a genetic foundation for personality. Instinctively, pouncing on opportunity, being unstopable in pursuit of a vision, being able to persuade others of the value of your idea — those are some of the marks of thinking like an entrepreneur.”

This really goes at the Nature vs. Nurture arguments that never really get answered all that definitively. Personally, I don’t know how to tell where my guts come from, but if it’s hereditary then I’m happy to have that edge (if any).
What about you? Do you have entrepreneurial behavior or personality? Do you come from a long line of entrepreneurs?

My dad has started 2 moderately successful businesses. I’ve thought about it, but currently, I’m more of a worker than a leader. I’ve love to lead the charge, but I feel I need to learn more in case my team members get smarter than me; at least, enough for me to call bs when I’m being bs’d.
Bottom line; he and I both want to follow our dreams, and don’t like being told what to do by someone if it deters us from our goals. He runs his own business, I iron-handedly control my career.
“Of course, if they get too rich, then they become Paris Hilton.”
Not sure what that means. She’s done anything but regress from an entrepreneurial spirit. The Hilton’s billions speak more to the nature of a tychoon that maintains an aggressive momentum in developing what basically amounts to a single opportunity/idea than that of a entrepreneur. The nature of an entrepreneur is more than being successful in a single business, it’s the ability to transfer that nature to new opportunities. I don’t know the Hilton’s history, or if the previous generations may have been successful or not in various ventures. Even if Paris’s millions doesn’t amount to the families billions, her ability to transfer that entrepreneurial knowledge to the ‘media’ and clothing industries suggests she got something whether biological or environmental. Entrepreneurial spirit is both the ability to ceize an opportunity and to create the opportunity.
Digressing into using the Hilton’s children as examples is a horribly waist of time. Shame on the author. How could you possibly calculate the ratio of ceising an opportunity when the opportunities are countless. He even got me to waste a paragraph on the subject.
The best luck at studying this might come from looking at disenfranchised children and grandchildren of successful entrepreneurs. Scratch that, the sociologists won’t ever get it. We’ll get better at analyzing sociogenetic studies over the next 20yrs as we get better at cross referencing genetic profiles with well designed social/psychological profile surveys.
Anechdotal evidence is on borrowed time unless it follows from genetic studies. It’s all up for interpretation.
What type of entrepreneur are you? An opportunist or creationist?
I’m definitely not the kind to create opportunity. As for being an opportunist, well, have I not had opportunities pass me or have I just failed to recognize them. Recognition could probably be learned to some extent, so maybe that’s all I need. If I learned to recognize opportunity and then failed to ceize on it, than I’d know that I was not an entrepreneur. For now, I’ll have to settle for being someone who might or not have potential. But I digresss….
Those are some great comments. I think it would be interesting to run a study using some of the entrepreneurs from the huge community at The Go Big Network http://www.gobignetwork.com . These folks are highly successful entrepreneurs, investors, etc and are extremely accessible. Just a thought.
