5 cents per message? That’s way cheaper than shortcode so I’m going to guess that it’s definitely being done via SMTP. I don’t know which advertiser would pay for SMTP given that they could build their own system for less and send for less.

stay tuned… in jan. 1, 2004 we are launching a totally free sms network (sponsored by 55 characters from an advertiser)… it is a simple business model. the 5 cents us per message covers our cost and allows users to send and receive free sms. i would welcome comments from potential user.

If a phone, or more desirably, a phone’s service was made cheaper because I opted in to suffer banner ads on my phone, I’d definately do it. I’m so numb to ads nowadays, and could probably find an “undisclosed method” to stop them if really cared to.
